WhyNickel is the product of a year-long exploration into the role of new technology in US nickel security, by Walter D. Johnsen.

Walter is an experienced investor, venture builder, and entrepreneur. He was previously at Marble, a Paris-based clean-tech venture studio, where he led all heavy industry deals. He holds a PhD in chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania.

His central thesis: nobody in the West makes money on nickel, and technology is the highest-leverage way to change that.

This work led him to found Crucible Mining Inc., a critical mineral technology provider and project developer. Crucible's goal is to build a profitable, resilient, and clean US critical minerals supply chain.
